FreeSummer time heat can be intense here in North Carolina, which sometimes causes staff and children to not enjoy spending time in their outdoor learning environment. However, we know that spending time outdoors benefits children’s mental, physical and emotional health. Research also shows that adults who are exposed to high levels of sunlight in their childhood have an increased risk for melanoma, a serious skin cancer. Best practices in child care state that children should spend at least 60 minutes a day playing outside and that 1/2 to 3/4 of the outdoor learning environment should be shaded. This training will cover inexpensive but reliable ways to provide shade in your outdoor learning environment.
